SACRAMENTO, CA — Democrat Xavier Becerra has won California’s 2026 gubernatorial election, defeating Republican Steve Hilton and becoming the state’s next governor,

Becerra, a former California attorney general, U.S. congressman and Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, will succeed outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom.

His victory marks a historic milestone, making him the first Latino elected governor of California and the state’s first Latino governor in more than a century.

Throughout his campaign, Becerra emphasized healthcare, immigration protections and defending California’s policies against the Trump administration. Hilton focused on reducing the cost of living, lowering gas prices and addressing homelessness.
