Lake Los Angeles – Los Angeles County Public Works Roads is preparing to start a chip seal project in both Sun Village and Littlerock areas. Both should start on Monday, July 12th .

When you see temporary no parking signs on the roads, similar to the sign pictured, the reason is Los Angeles County Road will be doing a chip and seal process.

Chip seal is also known as rock and oil. How are chip seals different from asphalt overlays? The difference is in the construction method. Hot mix asphalt pavement is produced by heating liquid asphalt and mixing it with aggregate, with the mix then spread and compacted to form a durable road structure and riding surface. Chip sealing uses the same ingredients as asphalt concrete paving, but the construction method is different. With chip seals, a thin film of heated asphalt liquid is sprayed on the road surface, followed by the placement of small aggregates ("chips"). The chips are then compacted to orient the chips for maximum adherence to the asphalt, and excess stone is swept from the surface. The ingredients of hot mix asphalt and chip seals are the same; only the construction methods are different. In hot weather, chip seals re-seal cracks by flowing back together.

The list of streets to be chip sealed are:

• Avenue Q10 from 90th Street East to 105th Street East

• Avenue Q12 from 90th Street East to 105th Street East

• Avenue Q14 from 90th Street East to 105th Street East

• Avenue R from 90th Street East to 105th Street East

• 100th Street East from Palmdale Boulevard to Avenue R

• 102nd Street East from Palmdale Boulevard to Avenue Q12

• 102nd Street East from Avenue Q14 to Avenue R

• 105th Street East from Palmdale Boulevard to Avenue R

Littlerock Double Chip Seal: 101st Street East:

• 101st Street East from Avenue T to Avenue S

Dale Brown, Road Maintenance Superintendent at the Los Angeles County Public Works Road Yard at 173rd Street East and East Avenue J said, “We will not be closing the streets. Access will be kept open as it is a quick process. Area residents will see sweepers and rollers during the operation. The placement process is quick, the curing time is about 4 hours. The road will be open. I don’t believe we will have any road closure for this project most likely just flag personnel at intersections.

“Please, no water sprinklers, driveway washing, car washing, etc., during this time as it will interfere with the project. Water and oil do not mix. If there is water, the seal will not work.”
