Steve Hilton Proposes Eliminating California DMV

Palmdale, Ca — Gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton is proposing the elimination of the California Department of Motor Vehicles as a standalone state agency as part of his “Cali-fordable” campaign platform.

Hilton’s proposal would move many DMV services online or to local offices while maintaining essential state functions involving licenses, records, fraud prevention and driver safety.

The plan also calls for reducing annual vehicle registration costs to a flat $73 per vehicle.

Critics have questioned how California would replace billions of dollars in registration revenue that currently supports transportation and California Highway Patrol operations, while also raising concerns about transferring some DMV responsibilities outside the agency.

Hilton argues the changes would reduce bureaucracy, lower costs and make services more convenient for California motorists.

Major changes to the DMV would require state legislative action.
