Statement on the City of Lancaster Suing Its Own Citizens Over the Recall Effort

Lancaster, California. - The group that spearheaded the recall campaign against City of Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris has issued a statement in response to the lawsuit filed against them by the Lancaster City Clerk, Andrea Alexander.
The City of Lancaster on their official FB page on April 11th , 2025 posted.
“As the City Elections Official and the City Attorney, we affirm the importance of the democratic process, including the public’s right to initiate a recall. That right, however, must be exercised in full compliance with all applicable election laws.
We conducted a thorough review of the recall documents submitted and cross-referenced all materials to ensure compliance with the California Elections Code. During this review, we identified several errors in the petition, including statements that are factually incorrect or misleading.
Specifically, the petition falsely states that:
• “Parris…rais[ed] waste management fees without approval.”
• “He’s manipulated the democratic process by extending his term from 2 to 4 years without citizens voting for change.”
The accuracy of recall materials is critical to the proper administration of elections. We encourage all residents to rely on official sources and verified facts when evaluating matters that impact local government.”
“It is a dark day for democracy when a city uses taxpayer-funded lawyers to sue its own citizens simply for exercising their constitutional right to hold elected officials accountable. The City of Lancaster—through its City Clerk—has filed a lawsuit against dozens of ordinary residents, veterans, community leaders, and parents who dared to sign and support a recall petition. This is not just a legal maneuver; it is an attempt to intimidate, silence, and suppress the will of the people. That’s right: instead of answering to the people, they’re trying to shut us down in court.

We understand Rex will do whatever he can to stay in power but the power of the people will prevail. I recallled a mayor in California City over a year ago and this city is wasting money. When recalling the person being recalled has an opportunity to contest the allegations and it legally has to be posted on the petition form. The county certifies it to proceed. The city needs to take it up with the county if the county gave the petitioners a green light to proceed. Now the city is legally putting itself in a worse position by interfering with a legal recall. Good luck Lancaster residents you will be protected by the state and its laws on recall. I have been there and done that!
