Ridgecrest, CA.- The Ridgecrest Police Department is assisting the Kern County Public Health Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at their request in addressing illegal food vendors operating within and around the City of Ridgecrest.
We are aware of recent social media discussions regarding enforcement actions involving these vendors. While we understand that the food offered may be appealing, we want to provide important context to our community.
The vendors who have been contacted and shut down were not targeted without cause. They have been contacted multiple times by the County Health Department, educated on requirements, and given warnings. Despite this, they have continued to operate without proper permits.
There are several key concerns:
• Public Health & Safety: Proper handwashing stations, restroom access, and safe food storage (including cold storage) are required to prevent illness and protect public health.
• Fairness to Local Businesses: Many of these vendors are not local. They are operating from outside the area without paying local taxes or contributing to the community infrastructure that supports legitimate businesses.
• Criminal Concerns: Through the course of an ongoing multi-month investigation, the department has developed concerns that some individuals involved may be connected to human trafficking activity. This remains an active investigation.
Our goal is not to take away from the community, but to ensure safety, fairness, and compliance with the law.
We welcome your feedback. If you have thoughts, concerns, or information, please reach out to the Ridgecrest Police Department or the Kern County Public Health Department.
