Reading is and has its own rewards

Lake Los Angeles – Save the Children - Wilsona School District – Wednesday, October 26, 2022, in front of parents, students, board members and adoring families, the children of the Save the Children Summer 2022 Reading Challenge were honored and rewarded for their outstanding achievements in reading. The prizes included games, headphones, Kindle readers and bicycles.

The 100 Days of Reading Summer 2022 started June 1 and ended on September 8. After the learning by computer screen, after months of school closings, learning disruptions and hurdles and experiencing the in-classroom learning again in the school year 2021-2022, the next year of 100 Days of Reading will help settle the dust and again give kids an enjoyable way to engage in reading and learning during their summer away from school. The hope is to keep the forward progression making a significant impact on the lives of children after last year’s successful summer reading campaign.

In the spring, WiIsona School District Superintendent Dr. Bervel announced, “Save the Children will be kicking off their 100 Days of Summer Reading Challenge on June 1st, which will run through September 8th. It’s easy to participate. This is a great program to keep your child actively reading and learning over the summer break.”

Save the Children’s summer reading campaign fuels literacy support in rural America. June 1 of 2019 was the inaugural launch of the program. Save the Children said, “All children are at risk of the summer slide, meaning they can lose achievement gains made in the previous school year. A child’s summer learning experiences during their elementary school years can impact their success in higher grades, including whether they graduate from high school and move on to college. According to the National Summer Learning Association, children growing up in poverty are at even greater risk – low-income children typically lose two to three months of reading progress each summer.”
