PWD will host an in-person Let’s Talk H2O

Palmdale, CA – Palmdale Water District (PWD) will host an in-person Let’s Talk H2O! at Lake Palmdale with PWD to share information about the state of our water supply and to encourage conservation.

The event, scheduled for 10-10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 8, is free, but registration is required. Register at https://bit.ly/3cLZdPr. Although the event will be outdoors, the number of attendees will be limited.

“This year has been an arid year for California,and PWD is currently using reserve water supply to meet this year’s demands,” Resource and Analytics Director Peter Thompson Jr. said. “While the supply is sufficient for 2021, we have to start thinking and planning for next year. If 2022 is similarly dry, it will further reduce the amount of available water supply across the state and to PWD.”

LET’S TALK to conserve the current water supply. Due to the state’s dry conditions, the California Department of Water Resources has limited PWD and the 28 otherState Water Contractors to 5% of the annual water allocation from the State Water Project. For PWD, that means only 1,065 acre-feet of its contracted water can be drawn from the California Aqueduct. Estimations show that the demand for water in 2021 is 22,300 acre-feet. Fortunately, PWD’s forward-thinking water supply planning is enabling it to pull more water from the aqueduct through other programs, transfers and exchanges.

PWD receives water from three different sources – State Water Project, Littlerock Reservoir, and groundwater – to serve about 126,000 people within its boundaries.

“Saving water is going to be crucial this summer,” Thompson said. “It’s going to take a community effort to reduce our consumption and save our water for the future. Take advantage of the rebates that the District is offering right now and get new water-saving appliances or gadgets.”
