PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is calling all gardeners and green thumbs to the Palmdale Landfill for its annual Spring Compost Giveaway. To help residents prepare their landscapes for the warmer months ahead, the City is providing free, high-quality compost to ensure local gardens get a healthy start. The event will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Palmdale Landfill, located at 1200 City Ranch Road.
The compost provided is a direct result of the community’s recycling efforts, created from local yard waste and food scraps collected through the City’s organic recycling program. By diverting these materials from the landfill, Palmdale is reducing methane emissions and returning vital nutrients back into the local soil.
“As someone with a background in environmental science, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of sustainable waste management,” said Mayor Eric Ohlsen. “This giveaway is a celebration of our ‘closed-loop’ system — turning yesterday’s organic waste into tomorrow’s thriving gardens. It’s a simple yet powerful way for our community to contribute to a cleaner, greener Palmdale.”
The compost is pre-filled into bags weighing approximately 29 pounds each, so residents no longer need to bring their own shovels or containers. There is a limit of five bags per person to ensure as many neighbors as possible can benefit, and distribution is handled on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. This event is open exclusively to Palmdale residents, and a valid ID is required at the site to verify residency.
“Our goal is to continually enhance the quality of life for our residents,” added Mayor Pro Tem Austin Bishop. “Providing these resources for free not only supports our local families’ landscaping projects but also strengthens our shared commitment to a more sustainable future. We invite everyone to stop by, grab their bags and help Palmdale bloom this spring.”
