New City Council Sworn In, Crime Reduction and Student Scholarships Spotlighted

Lancaster, CA – A new Lancaster City Council was officially sworn in Tuesday afternoon during a packed meeting that drew standing ovations, proclamations, and a clear message from Mayor R. Rex Parris: “This isn’t about pay. It’s about gratitude and service.”


Council Swearing-In & Call for Unity. After taking their oaths of office, councilmembers were met with a standing ovation from residents and city staff. In remarks following the ceremony, Mayor Parris urged the community to “let go of political affiliation” and focus on serving Lancaster residents.

The council issued a proclamation thanking outgoing councilmembers Raj Malhi and Marvin Crist for their service. Former Councilmember Crist reported progress on public safety, noting a 35% reduction in crime during his tenure.

Students & Athletes Honored
The meeting also celebrated local students from Quartz Hill High School and SOAR High School. Mayor Parris told students in attendance they will receive $1,000 scholarships.

Quartz Hill High School made history as the first public school in California to win a CIF championship, defeating its opponent 2-0. The student athletes were also awarded $1,000 scholarships for their achievement.

Public Safety Initiative
Looking ahead, Mayor Parris announced that new citywide cameras are expected to reduce crime by 50%, building on the 35% reduction already achieved.

Lauren Hughes Leslie was appointed vice mayor, councilmembers were appointed to various city committees .
