Local Scout Organizes Free Swim Safety Clinic for Children in Lancaster This Saturday Nov 14

LANCASTER, CA — A local Scout working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout is giving back to the Antelope Valley community by organizing a free swimming and water safety clinic for children ages 4 to 12.
Nathaniel Terrell, who has spent the past 10 years in Scouting, is organizing The SafeSwim Project, a free community event scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Family YMCA in Lancaster.
The clinic will provide beginner swimming lessons and water safety education to as many as 60 children, helping families access potentially lifesaving skills without the financial burden of traditional swimming lessons.
Free Swimming Lessons and Water Safety Education
The SafeSwim Project aims to ensure that more children have the opportunity to develop swimming skills and learn how to stay safe around water.
Children will receive swimming instruction based on their individual abilities. Parents and children will also participate in an educational presentation covering important water safety topics, including adult supervision, proper life jacket use, and drowning prevention.
Participation is completely free, but registration is limited to 60 children and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Scout’s Mission to Give Back
For Nathaniel, organizing the clinic is both a personal passion and an important step toward earning the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.
After a decade in Scouting, Nathaniel wanted his Eagle Scout service project to make a meaningful difference in his community while reflecting something that has played an important role in his own life.
Swimming has been a major part of Nathaniel’s life for as long as he can remember. What began as an activity he enjoyed has grown into a passion, and he hopes to become a beach lifeguard in the future.
His experience in the water inspired him to help children who might not otherwise have access to swimming lessons.
“I’ve been swimming for most of my life, and I know how important it is to learn. I also know that not every kid gets the same opportunities. I wanted to use something that has played such a big role in my life to help other people. After 10 years in Scouting, earning Eagle Scout means a lot to me, but I want to know that I did something with it that actually helps my community,” Nathaniel said.
Helping Children Learn Lifesaving Skills
For many families, the cost of swimming lessons can be a barrier to teaching children essential water safety skills.
Through The SafeSwim Project, Nathaniel hopes to help close that gap by making swimming education accessible to local families.
Beyond earning his Eagle Scout rank, his goal is to help children gain confidence in the water while teaching them skills that could one day save their lives.
Even helping one child become more confident and knowledgeable about water safety would make the project worthwhile.
