Lancaster, CA.- As America observes International Self-Care Day on July 24, it’s important to remind ourselves about the importance of prioritizing our well-being, health experts say.

With busy schedules and endless responsibilities, many people struggle to find time for self-care. Brenda Sanchez-Orozco, a licensed marriage and family therapist at Kaiser Permanente in the Antelope Valley, shares practical strategies for incorporating wellness into even the most hectic routines.

Redefining self-care

“Self-care doesn't have to mean long spa days or expensive retreats,” says Sanchez-Orozco. “It’s about small, consistent actions that support both your mental and physical well-being. The key is finding what works for your lifestyle and making it sustainable.”

She emphasizes that self-care is a necessity, not a luxury. “When we take care of ourselves, we're better able to care for others and handle life's challenges more effectively,” she says.

Simple strategies that make a difference

You can practice many effective self-care techniques in just a few minutes, according to Sanchez-Orozco. “I often recommend what I call ‘micro self-care’ — brief activities that can fit into any schedule,” she explains. “Even five minutes of deep breathing or a short walk can reset your stress levels and improve your mood.”

Sanchez-Orozco recommends the following practical daily self-care strategies:

  • Take three deep breaths before starting your day.

  • Set boundaries around work hours and technology.

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.

  • Get sunlight and fresh air, even briefly.

  • Practice gratitude, even on tough days.

Cultivate joy as a form of self-care

  • Savor small moments such as enjoying a warm drink, a kind word, or a beautiful view.

  • Add joyful movement to your day by dancing, stretching, or taking a walk.

  • Make time for hobbies or creative outlets that energize you.

  • Celebrate your efforts and achievements, no matter how small.

The mind-body connection

Physical and mental health are closely linked, according to Sanchez-Orozco. “When we’re stressed, our bodies respond with tension, fatigue and other symptoms,” she says. “Simple physical activities like stretching or walking can help release mental stress, while relaxation techniques calm both mind and body.”

Some activities address both aspects simultaneously. “Yoga, tai chi, or gardening can provide physical movement while promoting mental calm.” Sanchez-Orozco says.

Making self-care sustainable

“The biggest mistake people make is trying to do too much at once,” Sanchez-Orozco notes. “Consistency matters more than intensity.”

She suggests scheduling self-care like any other necessary appointment. “When we put it on our calendar, we’re more likely to follow through,” she adds.

Take action:

  • Choose one small self-care practice to try this week.

  • Schedule brief breaks throughout your day.

  • Practice saying no to commitments that drain your energy.

  • Connect with supportive friends or family members.

  • Consider professional support when stress feels overwhelming.
