Lancaster, CA.- Homeowners in Lancaster now have a new way to simplify the process of building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), commonly known as a granny flat, guest house or backyard home.

The City of Lancaster has announced the availability of Pre-approved ADU Plans, a program designed to reduce the time, cost and complexity of obtaining permits for qualifying ADU projects.
The plans, available through the City’s Building & Safety Division, have already been reviewed to meet City requirements and include most of the documents needed during the permitting process. By using a pre-approved design, homeowners can potentially move through permitting more quickly while avoiding some of the costs associated with creating custom architectural plans.
The program currently offers five ADU floor plans, ranging in size from 370 square feet to 1,200 square feet. Each design is available in either a California Ranch or Mediterranean architectural style, allowing homeowners

to select an option that complements the appearance of their existing home.
City officials say the program is intended to make it easier for residents to add housing for family members, create rental opportunities or increase the value and functionality of their property.
ADUs have become increasingly popular throughout California as communities look for ways to expand housing options while making efficient use of existing residential neighborhoods.
Residents interested in learning more about the program or viewing the available designs can visit the City’s website or contact the Building & Safety Division at 661-723-6144.
