Lancaster, CA – As the Antelope Valley Fair approaches (September 25-29), residents are gearing up for days of fun, entertainment, and of course, indulgent fair food. But how can you enjoy all the fair has to offer without completely derailing your health goals? Dr. Deepthi Karanam, a nephrologist and lifestyle medicine expert at Kaiser Permanente Antelope Valley, offers some practical advice.

“Added sugar, excessive salt intake, and saturated fat can cause the progression of disease,” Dr. Karanam explains. However, she assures that with some mindful planning, you can still have a great time at the fair. “By being mindful, planning, and balancing indulgent foods with healthier choices, we can still have a great time at the AV Fair,” she advises.

One key aspect to consider is hydration, especially given the typically hot weather during fair time. Dr. Karanam recommends, “Start hydrating before you arrive at the fair and carry a refillable water bottle. Limiting caffeinated beverages and increasing intake of foods with high water content like fruits, smoothies, and salads helps with staying hydrated.”

For families looking to incorporate healthier choices without missing out on the fun, Dr. Karanam suggests several strategies. “Mindful eating, smaller portions, sharing portions, staying active by tracking steps, and focusing on the fair experience are some simple ways to make healthy choices,” she says.

But what about those irresistible fair treats? Dr. Karanam’s approach is all about balance. Instead of avoiding your favorite fair foods altogether, consider sharing portions with friends or family. This way, you can sample a variety of foods without overindulging.

Remember, the fair is more than just food. Take advantage of the walking you’ll do as you explore exhibits and attractions. “Staying active by tracking steps” can be a fun way to offset some of those extra calories.

After the fair, you might feel like you’ve strayed from your health goals. Don’t worry – Dr. Karanam has advice for getting back on track: “Continue hydration, eat more nutritionally dense food like fruits and vegetables, decrease processed food intake, stay physically active, and prioritize sleep.” She adds, “Reflection and refocus is always a good strategy.”

By following these tips, Antelope Valley residents can fully enjoy the fair experience while maintaining a balanced approach to health. Remember, it’s all about moderation and making mindful choices. So go ahead, enjoy the AV Fair – your health and your taste buds will thank you!
