PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale has been awarded $400,000 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program in the Planning and Demonstration category to support its Active Transportation Plan update and development.

The award reflects strong federal support for Palmdale’s commitment to improving roadway safety and expanding safe, accessible walking and biking options for residents of all ages.

“Receiving this SS4A grant is an important step forward for Palmdale as we work to create safer streets for everyone,” said Mayor Eric Ohlsen. “This funding will help us evaluate current conditions, engage the community and develop targeted, actionable recommendations so we can better plan and prioritize future improvements.”

The SS4A grant will support a comprehensive planning effort focused on improving safety for people who walk, bike, take transit and travel to school, and will include:

  • Safe Routes to School assessments and a qualifying plan, including walkability audits

  • Roadway reconfiguration concepts and traffic calming strategies

  • Bicycle and pedestrian planning to improve connectivity and accessibility

  • Infrastructure audits to identify gaps and safety concerns

  • Prioritized project recommendations that will guide future improvements and funding opportunities

The planning effort will include stakeholder engagement across local agencies, school districts, transportation partners and community organizations to ensure the updated plan reflects community priorities and supports equitable, long-term safety improvements.

“This investment will help us plan smarter and build safer. By focusing on Safe Routes to School and pinpointing improvements that support people walking and biking, we’re working toward a connected transportation network that serves families, students and residents across Palmdale,” said Mayor Pro Tem Austin Bishop.

Palmdale’s updated Active Transportation Plan will provide a clear framework for addressing transportation deficiencies and identifying future improvements such as sidewalks, bicycle lanes, crosswalk enhancements and Complete Streets concepts designed to protect all road users.
