City of Lancaster Employees Show Support for “Denim Day”

avdailynews.com

Lancaster, Ca.-We geared up for #DenimDay and wore our favorite pair of jeans to work today! #YourCuteJeans 👖💙 In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, people are encouraged to wear denim on this day of action and awareness to combat victim-blaming and educate others about sexual abuse.

Denim Day began in 1999 after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices reasoned that the victim wearing tight jeans must have encouraged her rapist in removing her jeans, indicating consent. The women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work the next day in solidarity with the victim. Sexual assault is difficult to talk about, and abusers frequently get away with it. As a result, Denim Day attempts to rid the world of such attitudes and laws, bringing true justice and support to those who deserve it.

Join us in this international campaign in solidarity with victims and in protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault. For more information and resources on sexual assault, please visit https://www.rainn.org/national-resources-sexual-assault-survivors-and-their-loved-ones.
