Lake Los Angeles – Sorensen Park - At 7:05am on Wednesday June 15, 2022, 3 cars were lined up at the gate to receive food from the distribution brought to this community by Supervisor Kathryn Barger. At 7:30am the line was approaching 170th Street. By 10:00am the line was all the way to the fire station.
Antelope Valley CERT members came to volunteer in the distribution. Mark Hagan, Area Commander for CERT said, “We had 7 members attend today’s distribution as we performed traffic control, organized the drive through and were just there to make sure everyone was served, and everyone was safe.” LLA had 2 members, Acton-1, Palmdale-2 and Lancaster-2 CERT members. In addition to CERT, Resident Deputy Borruel and LASD Parks Bureau Security Officers were on scene.
Chuck Bostwick from Supervisor Barger’s office was on scene before 7:00am helping the organizing and the distribution route. The entry was at the east gate, down to the basketball courts where two lines were formed as the team loaded cars instantly. LLA folks were on their way home with two boxes per household containing canned goods and staples along with a fresh assortment of apples, oranges, carrots, eggs, milk, onions, a package of fresh tortillas and a frozen whole chicken for roasting or grilling on the BBQ provided by the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
Bostwick said, "This was Los Angeles County’s ninth grocery distribution in the Antelope Valley in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic. Grocery distribution events were held in 2020 in Littlerock, Lake Los Angeles, Quartz Hill, east Lancaster and Pearblossom, and last year at Antelope Valley College and twice at the University of Antelope Valley’s Pioneer Event Center."
The air was cool and the wind none during most of the drive. However, it got hot very quickly and before noon it was 90° and getting hotter.
According to the PIO officer on duty 597 Lake Los Angeles households were served. It was a great day for Lake LA.
