Palmdale, CA – Despite this heat wave in October, it’s not too early to start planning for your winter garden by attending the Water-Wise Workshop: Preparing Your Garden for Winter at Palmdale Water

District (PWD).

The free workshop will be from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at PWD’s main office, 2029 East Avenue Q, Palmdale. To register for the

event, visit https://bit.ly/PWDWINTERGARD24. All attendees will be entered in a raffle to win a gardening tool or plant.

Derek Winkel, the Antelope Valley Resource and Conservation District’s (AVRCD) Nursery Manager, is the scheduled guest speaker. He

will share information on how to effectively winterize gardens during the cold months in the valley.

The topics that will be discussed at the workshop include understanding when the cold

season starts in the AV; identifying the types of plants and trees that need winter protection; and

exploring materials and techniques to safeguard gardens in the winter.

“We are looking forward to having Derek Winkel from AVRCD as our guest speaker,”

said PWD Water-Use Efficiency Specialist Maria Avelar. “He is an expert gardener and very

familiar with our valley’s unique weather and soil. He will be offering valuable tips on what we

can all start doing now to ensure that we have a thriving garden this winter.”

At the workshop, staff will also provide information on how to apply for the PWD Water-

Wise Landscape Conversion Program, which offers residential customers up to $3,000 in rebates

and an unlimited amount for commercial accounts, as well as other available customer rebates.

Since 1918, the Palmdale Water District has provided high-quality water at a reasonable

cost. We pride ourselves on providing great customer care; advocating for local water issues that
