LANCASTER – As part of its celebration for Native American Heritage Month, California State Park’s Antelope Valley Indian Museum State Historic Park (SHP) will showcase two talented Indigenous artists in November. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet the artists and learn about their art and culture.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8, the museum will highlight internationally recognized gourd artist Nadiya Littlewarrior (Potawatomi/Cherokee). Nadiya founded Spirit Vessels Studio

in 1993. Regarding her gourds, Nadiya says, “They are Spirit Vessels to me because The Creator makes the Gourd People and puts their spirit in them, and I get to dress them with regalia.”

On Saturday, Nov. 14, and Sunday, Nov. 22, visitors can meet Delia “Dee” Dominguez (Yowlumne Yokuts/Ventureno Chumash/Kitanemuk), a traditional basketweaver and board

member of the California Indian Basketweavers' Association. Dee will share information about the importance of plant and habitat management (Indigenous stewardship) techniques, how

plants are gathered and prepared for weaving, and basketweaving techniques. She will also display her collection of woven baby and doll cradles. She is also involved in the “Bring Back the Kern” movement and will present a video prepared by the Los Angeles Times about her advocacy work to return water to the Kern River, restore the riparian habitats, and allow the salmon to return to their native lands on the river where they were born.
