Antelope Valley Family YMCA Dedicates Child Activity Center to Late Board Member and Child Advocate

LANCASTER, CA,-- The Antelope Valley Family YMCA is proud to announce the dedication of its Child Activity Center to Claudia Petryshyn, a former Board Member and passionate child advocate who passed away in 2021.

Claudia Petryshyn, who not only served on the YMCA board and played a crucial role in fundraising efforts to build the current YMCA building, was a tireless advocate for children with disabilities and a pillar of the Antelope Valley community. Her 30-year career as an advocate included setting up Individual Education Plans (IEPs), working as a substitute teacher in the Palmdale School District, and serving on various community boards.

"Claudia Petryshyn embodied the YMCA's mission of strengthening community," said Cynthia Lathrop, Antelope Valley Family YMCA's Executive Director. "Her commitment to improving the lives of children and families in our area was truly inspirational. By dedicating our Child Activity Center to her, we ensure that her spirit of service and compassion will continue to inspire future generations."

The dedication ceremony took place during the September Board meeting of the Antelope Valley Family YMCA on Tuesday, September 10th, with Claudia’s family in attendance.

"My mother's passion was helping children and families, and she did it with grace, compassion, and understanding," said Amanda Petryshyn, Claudia's daughter. "This dedication honors her legacy of tireless work for our community's youth. She would be humbled and thrilled to know that her efforts continue to make a difference in children's lives through this activity center."
