Lake Los Angeles – Challenger Middle School – Pictured is the membership of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands at the school. What a powerhouse of young, accomplished musicians!
What once was a group of 20 students that wanted to play musical instruments 2 short years ago has grown to 285 in middle school plus a 5th grade band that is coming along strong.
Their skills have grown beyond expectations. These musicians are serious about learning and enjoying their growth. They have reached a level of their skill goals a year ahead of time.

Led by teacher Peter Ortega, the band has excelled in so many areas and in such a short period of time. The District has invested heavily in time and instruments.
Superintendent Dr. Susan Andreas-Bervel said, “This has been a priority by our school board to expand on elective offerings and especially in the area of fine arts. Music provides such a creative outlet for our students, and we have been very proud of the accomplishments of Mr. Ortega and his vision for the music program in the District.”
Teacher/Band Leader Peter Ortega, pictured playing the tuba with his students, added, “We are preparing some new material (songs) for our upcoming concert at 4:30 PM on Friday May 12th. The students have been working hard to learn their notes and rhythms. Our band has grown from about 20 instrumentalists to 285 including approximately 140 from the fifth grade. We are very excited to offer Marching Band next year to our advanced students in the 6th-8th grade. We can use your support for upcoming trips and competitions. Please contact the Wilsona School District with any and all donations for the band. If you have working instruments that you don't need, we can accept them as a donation.”
