LANCASTER, Calif., — After a devastating car accident, 17-year-old Vanessa Rodriguez arrived at Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC), with life-threatening injuries including multiple fractures, spinal trauma, and a brain injury. Her survival was uncertain. What followed was a relentless, coordinated effort by AVMC’s Trauma and Intensive Care teams, working around the clock to save her life.

Vanessa spent nearly three months hospitalized, including weeks in the ICU. At her bedside was her mother, Jenny, who witnessed not only advanced clinical care, but extraordinary compassion. “Recibió mucho cuidado. Siempre la atendían cuando los llamaban. Todos eran muy amables,” Jenny shared. (Trans: She received so much care. They always attended to her when we called. Everyone was very kind.)

After weeks unconscious, Vanessa woke to a new reality—one that included the possibility she might never walk again. But her journey didn’t end there. Through continued rehabilitation, she is now regaining movement and taking assisted steps. “El proceso es largo y lento. Aún se está recuperando,” her mother said. (Trans: The process is long and slow; she is still recovering.)

“Stories like Vanessa’s reflect what our teams do every day—yet there are so many more stories like hers that the world never sees”, said Edward Mirzabegian, Chief Executive Officer, Antelope Valley Medical Center. “I’m proud of the life-saving work and compassion our teams deliver daily, and just as important, the partnership they have with the families providing comfort and hope in these most challenging moments.”

Dr. Reza Kermani MD, General Surgeon with AVMC, added, “Severe trauma cases require rapid coordination and highly specialized care. Vanessa’s survival and progress speak to the skill of our multidisciplinary teams and her resilience.”

One year later, Vanessa returned to AVMC, but this time not as a patient, but as a survivor. For her family, AVMC will always be more than a hospital, it is where hope was restored when it mattered most.
