Developing Story,

11pm update ..

The magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck south of Lake Tahoe just before 4 p.m., near the California-Nevada border.

July 8, 2021 M 6.0 earthquake in Antelope Valley, California, 32 km south-southwest of Smith Valley, Nevada, occurred as the result of normal faulting in the shallow crust of the North America plate. Preliminary focal mechanism solutions for the event, which describe the style of faulting in an earthquake, indicate slip likely occurred on a moderately dipping fault striking roughly north-south. This motion is consistent with east-west oriented extension that is common in Nevada and eastern California. This earthquake occurred along the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada, a major physiographic boundary along the California-Nevada border.

The US 395 has reopened after rocks fell into the roadway, but Caltrans said crews will remain at the scene in case there are aftershocks.

The epicenter was near the Antelope Valley fault. The earthquake was the largest one recorded since a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the area in 1994.

USGS had earlier listed the quake at magnitude 5.9, but hours later revised the figure up and said it was followed 30 seconds later by a 5.2 magnitude quake.

The two large quakes were followed by 40 aftershocks within three hours. By 10:30 p.m. there were a total of 76 aftershock
