Cesar Chavez, originally a farmworker from Arizona, transformed into a prominent civil rights activist. Growing up as a migrant worker, a seasonal laborer, shaped his lifelong struggle for justice. Migrant workers, often facing hardships and instability, faced challenges in their lives. Despite having only an eighth-grade education, Chavez began working in the fields at the age of 11 to support his family. Later, he served in the Navy, married, and had children. However, even with his years of hard work, he recognized a fundamental gap: the lack of farmworkers’ rights.
After his involvement with the Community Service Organization, a Latino civil rights group dedicated to empowering immigrants through voter registration, job training, and other initiatives, Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) in 1966 alongside fellow activist Dolores Huerta. Within two years, the organization had expanded to encompass over 1,000 workers.

This year's event features Cesar Chavez's grandson, Andres P. Chavez as the guest speaker!
Cesar L. Chavez, grandson of the civil rights and farm labor leader and son of Anthony Chavez, Cesar’s youngest son, Cesar was born and grew up in the farm worker movement. He accompanied his grandfather to picket lines and demonstrations in the Central Valley plus cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego. They went on hikes together in the mountains surrounding UFW headquarters at La Paz. Cesar presently oversees network functions such as musical and educational programming, and traffic (commercials and public service announcements) for the Cesar Chavez Foundation’s extensive English- and Spanish-language communications network.
