Mike Garcia, elected to represent the 25th Congressional District.

A special election to fill the US House of Representatives seat left vacant by former California Democratic Rep. Katie Hill’s resignation was held today Tuesday, May 12, 2020.

Garcia, a former Navy combat pilot, was declared the winner on Wednesday after his Democratic challenger, state assemblywoman Christy Smith, conceded the race. The congressional seat was previously held by Rep. Katie Hill, who resigned last year.

Republicans have won a special election for Congress in Southern California, reclaiming a suburban House seat that they lost to Democrats in the 2018 midterms.

Democrat Christy Smith, a state assemblywoman, conceded defeat to Republican Mike Garcia Wednesday, one day after the closely watched special election runoff for the seat vacated by former Rep. Katie Hill, who resigned last year.

"We believe that the current tally shows Mike Garcia is the likely victor in the May 12 special election," Smith said in a statement. "As such, I'd like to congratulate him."

Garcia was chosen to finish out the term ending in January; he will face Smith again in November in a bid to win a full two years in Congress.

“I’m ready to go to work,” Garcia said in a victory statement.
