Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC), along with Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) will be inspecting several businesses in the jurisdictional area of DACC for compliance.
DACC will be enforcing the provision of law that became effective with AB 485, which limits certain animals that can be sold in pet shops throughout the state to those obtained from specified sources—shelters and rescue groups.
In addition to compliance with the new law, DACC will inspect for humane standards of care. DACC will also conduct its normal annual inspection along with compliance of the new law. Enforcement will include citations, written warnings, and orders to make corrections and/or seizure.
This time of year, people are often looking for puppies and pet shops are known to provide those; however, if the animals are obtained from unauthorized locations and puppy mills, that is illegal.
DACC and spcaLA reminds Los Angeles County residents to adopt from their local animal care centers, spca, or humane society this holiday season.
If you are a pet shop operator, and have difficulty coming into compliance, please contact DACC right away so that you can work together to resolve the issues in advance of any scheduled inspections or other enforcement actions.
