NOT a Polar vortex, but rain is coming to Lancaster. Here are safety tips for driving in the rain.

While it may not be as serious as the Polar vortex hitting the Mid West right now, Southern California does have rain coming, off and on through Monday. Lancaster Sheriff's Station has some tips for driving in the rain. 1. Turn on those headlights. It's the law in all states to turn on headlights when visibility is low, and many states also require having the headlights on when the windshield wipers are in use. 2. Turn off cruise control. Activating cruise control on slick surfaces may cause you to lose control. If you hydroplane while you're in cruise control, your car will actually go faster. 3. Slow down. Speed limit signs are designed for ideal conditions NOT for when driving in the rain. So slow down, give yourself more time to get to and from your destination and make sure you arrive safely. 4. Make sure all headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are properly functioning and make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition as well. 5. Finally, don't forget about kids walking to school. If you are driving around a school zone, be extra cautious. If your kids normally walk to school or to the bus stop, double check their rain gear! Make sure they have proper umbrellas, boots and rain jackets or arrange a carpool with another parent if possible. And make sure they don't take shortcuts through a wash, dirt field or flooded sidewalks. Water can move quickly and may be deeper than it looks. Stay dry and drive safely!
