City of Lancaster Celebrates Community Values through Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

The City of Lancaster announced the 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, which will officially kick off the volunteer project season. Saturday, January 13, 2018, marks the City’s eleventh anniversary of engaging the community in the national United We Serve initiative. Each year, community members and local organizations come together to donate their time, resources, and skills to help build a stronger, healthier, and more unified Lancaster through their participation in the City’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

“Year after year, I am amazed by the unity displayed throughout our community during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “This day brings together family, friends, and neighbors in a cooperative effort towards a common goal – the working together of many for the improvement of our City for all. The City of Lancaster takes pride in the community’s ongoing commitment to serve.”

The City hopes to inspire more than 1,000 selfless volunteers to complete the local projects planned for this year. Volunteers are still needed and may register online at www.cityoflancasterca.org/mlkday. While the City’s official MLK Day of Service will be hosted on Saturday, January 13, 2018, ongoing service opportunities will be available throughout the year, via partnering non-profit and community service organizations.

“For me personally, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is a most rewarding event to partake in each year,” said Lancaster City Council Member Raj Malhi. “As one of many who seek to make Lancaster a better place -- I look forward to volunteering my time alongside the countless members of our community who put their heart and soul into improving this place we call home.”
