City of Lancaster to Host Free Household Hazardous Waste, Used Oil, and E-waste Collection Event Jan

The City of Lancaster, in collaboration with CalRecycle, will be hosting a free household hazardous waste, used oil, and e-waste collection event on Saturday, January 30. All Antelope Valley residents are invited to drive up and drop off these items. The free collection day will be held at Lancaster’s 24-Hr Recycling Center, located at the City’s Maintenance Yard (615 West Avenue H.). The event will take place from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.; however household hazardous waste will only be accepted from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The City of Lancaster encourages all residents of the Antelope Valley to take advantage of this free collection day to responsibly rid their homes of household hazardous waste, e-waste, used oil, and paint. Dumping these items into the household trash is illegal, as well as detrimental to the environment. The City urges residents to help keep our valley healthy and clean by bringing these items in for proper disposal. Not only does this create a positive impact for the environment, it also reduces costs associated with illegal dumping clean up, allowing funds to be redirected for other community programs and activities. Things to keep in mind when participating in this Collection Event: • This event is for household quantities only, not businesses. • It is illegal to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste. • Containers should be leak proof and secure during transport to avoid spilling. • Do not mix household hazardous wastes together. • You must remain in your vehicle and allow staff to unload your vehicle. • No eating, drinking, or smoking is permitted in the household hazardous waste receiving, handling, or storage areas. Common household hazardous wastes include: acids, cleaners, pesticides, aerosols, degreasers, polishes, batteries, fertilizers, pool chemicals, brake fluid, fuels, solvents, bleach, paint strippers, and waxes. Although household hazardous waste items are not regularly accepted at the 24-Hour Recycling Center, it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for recycling used oil, oil filters, cooking oil, labeled paint, and anti-freeze, along with any used, broken, or outdated electronics such as televisions, computers, and vacuum cleaners – basically anything which has a cord or takes a battery. The City of Lancaster will not accept ammunition, explosives/fireworks, pharmaceutical waste, medical/biological waste, radioactive waste, sharps (needles), tires, or furniture. For information regarding how to properly dispose of these items or for more information regarding this event, call 661-723-5885.
