Jimmy Webb to Bring The Glen Campbell Years to the Lancaster Performing Arts Center Stage

On Saturday, April 9, at 8 p.m., American singer, songwriter, and composer, Jimmy Webb will ignite the stage of the Lancaster Performing Arts Center with his heart-felt music and unforgettable lyrics. A four-time Grammy award winner, Webb is the only artist to have received Grammys for music, lyrics, and orchestration. Over the years, his songs have been recorded by such icons as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Linda Ronstadt, Art Garfunkel, Barbra Streisand, and Johnny Cash, to name a few. In the 1960s, Webb teamed up with Glen Campbell, creating an unlikely duo—a multi-platinum recording artist and staunch conservative with a long-haired, party-loving child prodigy songwriter—producing a string of memorable hits that earned them the status of being one of the most successful musical collaborations of all time. Creating hit songs like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” "Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” and “Honey Come Back,” Webb and Campbell set the bar on storytelling. In 1967, Webb was approached by Johnny Rivers to write songs for a new group, The Fifth Dimension, and contributed five songs to their début album Up, Up and Away. During the 1968 Grammy Awards the following year, “Up, Up and Away” (title track of the album of the same name), along with “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” received eight Grammy awards collectively. At the 1969 Grammys, two Jimmy Webb songs became hits for the second time with Isaac Hayes’ soulful version of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and Waylon Jennings' Grammy-winning country version of "MacArthur Park." In fact, according to BMI, Webb’s song "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" was the third most-performed song from 1940 to 1990.
