Tire Roundup Back in Lake Los Angeles - 2016

Lake Los Angeles - Each Spring for the past several years, Los Angeles County has brought their Tire Roundup event to our community. Collection is at the County Road Yard located at 17341 East Avenue J.
Lake Los Angeles and its surrounding desert has been a favorite dumping ground for tires from a myriad of sources. Although there are free waste tire collections in the Antelope Valley there is habitually an abundance of used tires scattered across the territory. These tires can be picked up and taken to the drive.
At one recent drive a LLA church group made a project of collecting illegally discarded tires and brought in 250+ tires to the drive. A LLA resident whose property backs up to empty desert brings in a copious amount of tires people toss on the back end of his lot annually. People haul tires into the drive via their horse trailers after scooping up numerous tires dumped in various areas of the outskirts of Lake Los Angeles and on their own property. Waste tires that are illegally dumped or improperly stored pose a serious threat to public health and safety, as well as to the environment. The result is visual blight and can be at significant expenses to residents. Waste tires can serve as a nesting area for pests, a ‘hotel’ for snakes and spiders and a breeding ground for mosquitos which can spread encephalitis and other illnesses. When waste tires catch fire they release a barrage of dangerous toxic smoke. When tires burn, it is almost impossible to stop the burn until it burns itself out.
