MOAH to Unveil #citizenselfie Art Installation This Saturday

Lancaster’s Museum of Art and History (MOAH) will unveil the #citizenselfie community art piece on Saturday, February 20 at 4 p.m. as part of the City of Lancaster’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service celebration. The #citizenselfie installation is a public engagement project documenting the Antelope Valley community. It revolves around taking selfies, a common practice amongst anyone carrying a smartphone these days. In October of last year, MOAH prompted participants to post a selfie describing what culture means to them, such as a picture with friends at a concert or a photo posing with their favorite piece of artwork. Once images were cropped and filtered, participants uploaded their snapshots to Instagram with the hashtags #citizenselfie and #moahlancaster. Thereafter, submissions were transferred to ceramic tiles and installed at MOAH. The #citizenselfie installation is one of two MLK Day of Service projects being held on Saturday, concluding this year’s MLK public engagement and service projects. The project was inspired by last year’s MLK Community Quilt, currently on display facing The BLVD in MOAH’s Hernando and Fran Marroquin Family Classroom. It will remain on display through the unveiling of the new exhibit. “The #citizenselfie project calls on community members to reflect on what culture means to them, with reflection being a key element as we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ideals for a better world,” said MOAH curator Andi Campognone. The #citizenselfie installation will be on display in the Hernando and Fran Marroquin Family Classroom at MOAH throughout 2016.
