City of Palmdale Yucca Neighborhood House to Host CICC’s Effective Black Parenting Program


PALMDALE – The City of Palmdale will host an award-winning Effective Black Parenting Program at the Yucca Neighborhood House, located at 503 East Avenue Q-3, beginning Monday, Feb. 8.

The classes will be held each Monday from Feb. 8 through May 16 from 10 am to 12:30 pm. Registration is required as space is limited, and is available by calling Eddy Faison 213/222-3306.

The program is Department of Child & Family Services (DCFS) approved and is geared towards parents, foster parents, grandparents, caregivers and relatives raising African American children ages 4 through 12.

Sponsored by the DCFS, Children’s Bureau, and Department of Mental Health, this nationally acclaimed parenting skill-building program, created by the Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC), teaches parents and others how to raise African American children to become healthy, proud and capable people. The program, which was designed with the guidance and direction of African American parenting scholars, fosters:

· Effective Family Communication

· Healthy African American Identity

· Extended Family Values

· Child Growth and Development

· Positive Self-Esteem

CICC’s Effective Black Parenting Program uses African proverbs as it teaches a series of highly effective and easy-to-use parenting strategies and skills:

· The Pyramid of Success for Black Children

· How to Prevent Drug Abuse

· Pride in Blackness

· How to Praise Effectively

· Modern Black Self-Discipline

· How to Use Special Incentives

· Family Rule Guidelines

· How to Confront Effectively

· The Thinking Parent’s Approach

· How to Ignore Effectively

· Children’s Developing Abilities

· How to Use Chit-Chat Times
