1,339 DUI arrests , CHP Issues Thousands of Citations During Independence Day Holiday Enforcement Period

CALIFORNIA — The results are in from the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) statewide Independence Day Holiday Enforcement Period, and officers were busy working to keep California’s roadways safe during the extended Fourth of July weekend.

According to the CHP, during the enforcement period from July 2 through July 5, officers made tens of thousands of enforcement contacts and issued thousands of citations targeting dangerous driving behaviors.

Holiday Enforcement Results

• 22,983 speeding citations issued for drivers traveling 100 mph or less

• 693 citations issued for drivers traveling over 100 mph

• 1,339 DUI arrests

• 43,250 total enforcement contacts statewide

The numbers highlight the continued dangers posed by excessive speed and impaired driving, particularly during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

CHP officials reminded motorists that speed limits are designed to protect everyone on the road and urged drivers to make safe choices behind the wheel.

“Speed limits exist for a reason. Slow down, stay alert, and help protect everyone on the road,” the CHP said in releasing the holiday enforcement results.

The Independence Day holiday traditionally sees increased traffic across California as families travel for celebrations, making enforcement efforts a critical part of reducing crashes and saving lives.

The CHP encourages all drivers to:

• Obey posted speed limits.

• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Avoid distracted driving.

• Wear seat belts at all times.

• Allow extra travel time and remain patient during heavy traffic.
